Are You Losing Hair After Weight Loss Surgery? Read This!

Thinning hair post bariatric surgery

So you’re considering bariatric surgery and have heard/read about the hair loss associated with it. At this point you’re probably more concerned with not dying from a leak in your new stomach or how to avoid excess/loose skin, but hair loss will probably strike sooner.

In September of 2016 I had the gastric sleeve (#VSG) and by Halloween (October 31, 2016), I noticed the hand fulls of hair leaving my head. Yes, I said hand fulls; and no, you can’t prevent it or avoid it. I really wanted to have good news about this, but hair loss will happen.

Two months prior to my surgery I started taking vitamins including 10,000 mcg of Biotin. I also used Sports Research Collagen Peptides. In particular, I used this brand and noticed beautiful growth in my nails, improvements on my skin and new hairs sprouted all over my head. I do recommend this product to everyone I meet. It is flavorless and you can mix it with tea or coffee for an added protein boost as each scoop contains 10 grams of protein. BUT, I have to reiterate my statement from the beginning of this post: It will NOT prevent/stop the hair loss post-weight loss surgery.

I was at work one day, at the time I held a cubicle job at a call center, and the janitor rolled out a huge ball of red hair that clogged her vacuum cleaner. As I was the only redhead in the office, there was no hiding the fact that hair loss had struck me.

I feared running my hand through my head. The hair just came out in bunches. Washing my hair was a traumatizing experience. You hear people tell you and you think you’re ready. You are not. Nothing can prepare you for the look of hair falling out from the follicles. Also, hair loss affects some people worse than others, with the worst cases among gastric bypass patients, resulting in severe alopecia.

That’s the bad news, and the ugly too, so what’s the good news?

It is only temporary.

In my own experience, the hair loss started to slow down around the 6 month post op mark; but again, this varies from person to person.

Still think weight loss surgery is the easy way out?

Sending love to all.
